Jane McAlevey, renowned labor organizer and movement strategist, died on Sunday, July 7 after entering hospice care at her home in California. Long time members fondly remembered Jane as a dynamic and impactful Veatch Program Officer for several years, beginning in 1994. Those who worked with Jane at UUCSR and across the globe recalled her fierce commitment to the power of organizing – and delightfully, her spirited love of horses. Jane went on to lead prominent labor organizing campaigns and to inspire countless new organizers through her teaching and writing, including the memoir: Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell): My Decade Fighting for the Labor Movement (2012). You can read more about Jane McAlevey’s life and work as reported in the New York Times, and in this recent interview with Veatch grantee, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!.
