Beloved Unitarian Universalist members and religious professionals,

We present this letter as an invitation to live into our principles and values at this moment. We invite all Unitarian Universalists to add their names to this message.

People of goodwill can and do prioritize different things in our common journey as a religious community. It has been this way in our faith for centuries. Our religious history of democratic process and responsible seeking calls us to engage that process in good faith and mutual respect. We can have different ideas about the direction of our religious faith. We can have a variety of perspectives on polity, bylaws, and other aspects of what is necessary to be an organized religion.

However, individuals who may or may not be involved in a local congregation are taking to social media, newsletters, videos, and podcasts to attack and defame our leadership and our processes, both directly involving the Article II re-write and against the UUA in general. When slander, conspiracy-thinking, and name-calling, such as accusations of cults, manipulation, and totalitarianism, are aimed at those who accept the responsibility to ethically serve our UUA, it is time to call one another back into right relations. This behavior is outside our principles and our values. We can tell the truth, set boundaries, be accountable to our greatest values and one another, and call one another back into right relations.

We want to be specific about some of the statements that have led us to write this invitation. Some claim that justice and equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts within the UUA are “woke nonsense,” and “woke identity politics” (often referring to transgender and racial justice), or “neo-racism.” There are claims that the Article II proposal will change their ability to voice anti-trans views in their congregations. These terms and statements, as well as the idea that the current Principles would support this, are contrary to our more than a century of commitment to advancing racial and gender justice in increasingly anti-oppressive and diverse ways.

Some claim that the UUA itself is “authoritarian” or a “mind control cult.” These are insults that echo right-wing rhetoric, unbecoming in our liberal tradition, and by their very nature, push the Beloved Community farther into the distance. These insults distract from the basic fact that nothing will happen to Article II without a vote of the delegates. Anyone who knows any Unitarian Universalists might joke: “A cult? We can’t even get people to remember to bring their pledge cards back in.”

Congregations have the authority to vote and hold the responsibility to determine who should represent them at the General Assembly. The General Assembly delegate body with its voting power holds the ultimate ability to determine our Association’s course. The will of the GA is carried out by the Board and administration.

The elected leaders who serve our faith do so in good faith at the request of the delegate body representing congregations. Most are volunteers who faithfully put in lots of work and effort, and deserve thanks, not derision. Claims that the UUA President and the all-volunteer UUA Board and Nominating Committee are conspiring to “take over congregations” and create “accountability panels” to “excommunicate” people and congregations are not grounded in respectful dialogue, or in the facts of our leadership’s true intentions. These phrases reach for the basest of fears and spread a conspiracy theory which has no place in our discussions.

We especially call out as the worst and most unacceptable of these attacks the direct name-calling and mockery being shown to our current UUA President, Rev. Dr. Sofía Betancourt. She continues to faithfully lead us while racist, sexist, and other derogatory terms are flung at her in response to her service.

We call for:

UUs to engage in the upcoming democratic process around Article II and other issues before us as we practice our faith through governance in ways that are respectful and anti-oppressive;
UUs to faithfully hold up truth and be honest to the facts themselves, and also respect those who disagree while faithfully engaging in the process;
UUs to use language with one another that reflects the high ideals of our faith;
the name-calling and sarcastic remarks aimed at those who are generously serving our faith to end;
individuals of all opinions on the Article II rewrite and the current direction of our faith to directly intervene in conversations when this happens, to invite apology and repair, and set again on the path of honest discussion of the issues.

There are many UUs who have varied and nuanced positions in opposition to all or part of the Article II rewrite, and many of those positions have nothing to do with the ideas behind the insults noted above.

Therefore, we also call for:

UUs not to dismiss genuine, honest, respectful, and faithful dialogue;
UUs not to cast all of those with concerns about the proposed Article II into the same boat and insult them based on the slanderous activity of some.

This is the time for all UUs to be open and mindful about the complexity of what is before us. We invite us all to pause, listen, and reflect. We honor that we are a faith with deep theological differences among us, all of which cannot be reflected in any one document.

We sign this as UUs with sincere differences of opinion on both the current and proposed Article II. But we affirm that the democratic process and the right to propose changes to our bylaws is part of what it means to remain a “living tradition.” We call for embracing the discussion of the complexity of addressing interconnected oppressions and our commitment to move toward justice in increasingly productive ways. And we further affirm that the Seven Principles – like James Luther Adams’s Five Smooth Stones, the James Vila Blake covenant, the statement “we are the church with the open mind… loving heart…helping hands…”, the tune of Old Hundredth, the red wallet cards by the late Rev. David O. Rankin, and the Eighth Principle – will remain part of our living tradition regardless of the vote to pass, amend, or not approve the proposed new Article II. What also needs to remain part of our tradition, or rather, to grow through this time, is our capacity to hold disagreement in love and tell the truth with both clarity and respect.

May our commitment to and covenant among our congregations, as well as all of our current and future covenants among our institutions, groups, and individuals, guide our faith journeys and call us to act according to our best understanding of what is good and just, leading us to wholeness and justice.
